Germany's affair with cars
(dpa) - In case you hadn't noticed, Germans are crazy about cars. Even if this enthusiasm has been waning among the young, the adoration of the "auto" remains closely linked to the country's national identity.
The western city of Bonn has now devoted a new exhibition to Germany's love affair with the automobile, which has been the lifeblood of the country's economy for decades.
Located in a contemporary history museum called Haus der Geschichte (House of History), which attracts around one million visitors a year, the show is titled "Loved, needed and reviled. The Germans and their cars". Read the entire article

7 REASONS YOU SHOULD NEVER DATE A GERMAN GIRL
![]() |
| German Girl at Beergarden |
1. You will get fat.
Croissants, rolls or bread with cheese and sausage, jam or Nutella for breakfast, bread as a side for lunch or in the form of dumplings, and bread with sausage or cheese for dinner will become the norm for you. Top that off with meat, potatoes and creamy sauces for lunch as well, cake or Danishes in the afternoon, and a (few) glasses of beer. Veggies? Uhm, sorry, the only things close to vegetables in a German diet are a side salad or Sauerkraut. If you’re tired of German cuisine, your options of foreign dishes are Döners, pizza, or pasta.
2. You will never be late anymore.
If you’re five minutes early, you’re almost late on German time – that’s how anal we are about it. And if you’re not letting us know that you’re five minutes late – you’re going to have a really hard time in this country! We have to live up to our reputation of being precise and punctual because these words stand next to “German” in the dictionary!

Cool new video to sing along from the current German charts - Stereoact feat. Kerstin Ott (German & English lyrics below)
Komm her meine Süße und
Reich mir deine Hand
immer lacht, immer lacht
oh, die immer lacht

She Who Always Laughs
She's the one who always laughs, always laughs
She who always laughs, she who always laughs
Oh, she who always laughs
And only she knows it's not
What it looks
Oh, she cries, oh, she cries, she cries
But only when she's by herself
As she is, as she is
The one
The one
Who always laughs, who always laughs, always laughs
Oh, she who always laughs
Oh, she who always laughs
Come here, my honey, and
Give me your hand
Show me who you are and
You'll see
What's it like
To laugh without lying at a time
Not to cry then.
You'll see
How they love you
To love you
I'm showing you
How things are
She's the one who always laughs, always laughs
She who always laughs, she who always laughs

The Truth about the German Christmas Pickle Tradition
Germans take credit for a lot of popular Christmas traditions and decorations. Whether it’s the Christmas tree, nutcrackers, incense smoker men or the Advent calendars – they all originated in Germany.
But NOT so the famous Christmas pickle!
Even though finding a pickle in the decorated Christmas tree may be an enjoyable tradition, it doesn’t come from Germany. In fact, I was surprised to hear about this silly custom when I had just moved to the US. As most other Germans, I had never even heard about such custom.
Here’s what the legend says: click for details

German Christmas Advent Calendars - Why So Special?
Another typical German thing – the Christmas Advent Calendar!
The famous protestant reformer Martin Luther is initially to ‘blame’ for it. He made out of the strictly biblical holiday, a family-oriented Christmas. Therefore initially the ‘Advent calendar’ was just used as a counting aid for kids. This way, they could count down the 24 days from the 1st day of Advent until Christmas. It still didn’t look like the Advent Christmas calendar as we know it today. Mostly families ...read full post

Cool German Song for Language Learners
Currently still topping the German charts: JORIS - Herz über Kopf (German & English lyrics below)
Oh, ich weiß ganz genau was du grad denkst
Oh, ich weiß ganz genau was du grad denkst

Head Over Heart
You haven't looked at me like this for a long time
I have tried too often to understand us
The eyes meet, the wine is already half empty
Oh, I know exactly what you are thinking now
The train has departed, time is gone
Feels so right but is it so wrong
I have tried too often to understand us
The eyes meet, the wine is already half empty
Oh, I know exactly what you are thinking now
The train has departed, time is gone
Feels so right but is it so wrong
And whenever it is time to go
I forget what once was and remain standing
The heart says stay
The head cries go
Heart over head
Heart over head
I forget what once was and remain standing
The heart says stay
The head cries go
Heart over head
Heart over head
You still wear your hair as before
and you dance exactly as before
The eyes meet, the room is already half empty
We said it so often, it does not work anymore
That was difficult at the beginning, but now much more
Music is off and you come closer and closer
and you dance exactly as before
The eyes meet, the room is already half empty
We said it so often, it does not work anymore
That was difficult at the beginning, but now much more
Music is off and you come closer and closer
Whenever it is time to go
I miss the moment and stand still
The heart says stay
The head cries go
Heart over head
Whenever it is time to go
I miss the moment and stand still
The heart says stay
The head cries go
Heart over head
Heart over head
Heart over head, I still cannot let you go
I still cannot let you go
Even when it is time to go
Heart over head
I miss the moment and stand still
The heart says stay
The head cries go
Heart over head
Whenever it is time to go
I miss the moment and stand still
The heart says stay
The head cries go
Heart over head
Heart over head
Heart over head, I still cannot let you go
I still cannot let you go
Even when it is time to go
Heart over head
Whenever it is time to go
I miss the moment and stand still
The heart says stay
The head cries go
Heart over head
I miss the moment and stand still
The heart says stay
The head cries go
Heart over head
And whenever it is time to go
I miss the moment and stand still
The heart says stay
The head cries go
Heart over head
I miss the moment and stand still
The heart says stay
The head cries go
